"You want a name that's catchy, that's going to get someone's attention," says James Marshman, associate director of Cosmo Beauty Academy in Saddle Brook. Wordplay is not offered on their syllabus. More likely, it's learned by imitation. It's something that people in the trade seem to naturally absorb, like hair color. Why all the hair-ifying puns? Are hair stylists just naturally quippers with clippers? Is it something they're taught in beauty college? In fact, he who would make a pun would shampoo, highlight, perm, color and blow dry. "He who would make a pun would pick a pocket." So wrote the 18th-century critic Samuel Johnson, who was not only snobbish, but wrong. Nor did we find "Color Me Beautiful," or "Flip Your Wig" - though these did turn up in Texas, where beauticians are seemingly more frank about the little tricks of the trade.
